Tauren Wells and Corey Asbury are the big winners at the 49th GMA Dove Awards, Tori Kelly thrills
In a powerful night of performances and appearances, the 49th Annual Dove Awards was a night to remember. The awards were given out at the Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee last night. The awards will be televised on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) on Sunday, October 21 at 9 p.m. ET.
The awards show included powerful performances by Tori Kelly and Kirk Franklin, deep and spiritual moments with Zach Williams, Jason Crabb and Rascal Flatts, and stirring songs from Lauren Daigle, Tasha Cobb Leonard, and Corey Asbury.
Tauren Wells took home 4 awards, including Best Contemporary Christian Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year. He also won a fourth Dove for rap/hip-hop recorded song for “War Cry,” a collaboration with Social Club Misfits that was inspired by the high school shooting tragedy in Parkland, Fla. Zach Williams took home Artist of the Year, and Corey Asbury took home the Song of the Year Award for his song “Reckless Love” as well as worship song of the year and worship album of the year.
“What a privilege this is. Isn’t it just like the Lord to take our failures and our overall jacked-up mess and turn it into something beautiful.” said Asbury “He takes our disappointments and turns them into a dance floor. He allows us to be kids again.”
Kelly and Franklin had the crowd on its feet with her performance or “Never Alone” from her gospel album, as she sent a acrobatic vocals to the audience and Franklin providing the energy that only he could as he directed the choir and stomped around the stage.
The night was a celebration of Christian music, with a variety of genres well represented. Rappers Social Club Misfits performed with Wells, Anthony Brown and Group TherAPy Performed their Contemporary Gospel hit “I Got That” while celebrating a young girl on stage who is battling bone cancer, and the was special collaboration between Koryn Hawthorn and Natalie Grant, who joined forces on Hawthorn’s soul-stirring hit “Speak the Name” was powerful.
